Ecumenical Links

There is a long tradition of good ecumenical relationships in the Islington area.

Each Good Friday the churches combine in a public act of witness.  Starting at the N1 Centre, Angel Central, well over 300 people walk to St Mary’s Church in Upper Street for a service of prayer and reflection.

In 2011 ‘Prayers Together in Islington’ organised a continuous reading of the 1662 King James Bible outside Waterstones on Islington Green.  This event was supported by almost every Christian community south of Holloway Road.  All the money raised was donated to ‘Islington Giving’.

The links with St John’s RC parish in Duncan Terrace led to a joint pilgrimage to St Paul’s Cathedral during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in January 2017, Westminster Cathedral in 2018, Westminster Abbey in 2019 and Charterhouse in 2020.

St James’ has a special relationship with the Association of Inter-Church families where a member of the Roman Catholic Church is married to someone baptised into another denomination.
