Songs for a Grandchild

Isabel Nisbet (contralto) and Rhidian Jones (piano) perform songs by Schuman, Parry, Britten and Downie.

The theme of “Songs for a Grandchild” derives from the Chamisso poem which Schumann omitted at the end of the sequence which he set in his famous song-cycle “Frauenliebe und
-leben”. In the final poem the speaker reflecting on her life and love is a grandmother talking to her granddaughter. Parry’s “Shulbrede tunes” were inspired by his grandchildren, and the songs by Britten and Downie include lullabies and reflections on life and love.
