Welcome to our website which we hope will give you a taste of life at St James\u2019 Church, Islington, a modern catholic parish within the Church of England committed to exploring how to live like Jesus in the 21st century.<\/p>\n

The Church was built in 1875 to serve the new houses being constructed to the south of Essex Road following the opening of New North Road in 1812 and the Regent Canal in 1820.<\/p>\n

St James’ remains a spiritual oasis within this vibrant and ever-changing community.\u00a0 Here the new award-winning Packington Estate stands alongside the remodelled wharves of the Canal basin, the picturesque tree lined Colebrook Row, the completion of tall apartment blocks on City Road and the highly acclaimed rose beds of Arlington Square.\u00a0 In the 2011 census the population is given as 10,341.\u00a0 30% are between the ages of 25 and 35.<\/p>\n

The recent refurbishment of the church has been designed to enable us to provide hospitality for a range of community events.\u00a0 The ‘Islington Proms’ are based at St James’ and the Church is used for concerts, rehearsals as well as meetings and school visits throughout the year.<\/p>\n

Most of the community of St James’ is engaged in discovering how to balance faith and intelligent enquiry with the demands of living in London today<\/em>.\u00a0 But we do not believe that being sacred means being solemn.<\/p>\n
